In this guide, we’ll be setting up the Raspberry Pi Plex Server using Raspbian. If you haven’t installed Raspbian yet, check out our guide on setting up Raspbian. For a lightweight version, consider installing Raspbian Lite.

Preparing your Raspberry Pi for Plex

  1. Before installing Plex Media Server on the Raspberry Pi, ensure your OS is fully updated with the following commands:
   sudo apt-get update
   sudo apt-get upgrade
  1. Next, we need to add the official Plex package repository to the Raspberry Pi. But before that, the apt-transport-https package must be installed to allow the apt package manager to retrieve packages over the https protocol, which Plex uses. Install the package with this command:
   sudo apt-get install apt-transport-https
  1. Now, let’s add the Plex repository key to the apt keyrings directory. This key ensures that the files you download are indeed from that repository and signed by that key. Execute the following command to download and save the key:
   curl https://downloads.plex.tv/plex-keys/PlexSign.key | gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/plex-archive-keyring.gpg >/dev/null
  1. With the Plex GPG key added, we can now append the official Plex repository to the sources list using the command below. Notice that we reference the keyring downloaded in the previous step.

  1. Having added a new repository, it’s necessary to run the update command again to refresh the package list:
   sudo apt-get update

If you encounter the error /usr/lib/apt/methods/https could not be found, it indicates that the https transport package hasn’t been installed correctly. Double-check its installation.

Installing Plex on Your Raspberry Pi

  1. With the Raspberry Pi prepared to access Plex’s official package repositories, we can proceed to install the Plex Media Server package. Execute the following command to install the plexmediaserver package:
   sudo apt install plexmediaserver
  1. The Plex installation process will automatically set up a few components:
  • A dedicated user and group named plex for running the Plex service.
  • A directory for temporary file storage during transcoding, located at /var/lib/plexmediaserver/tmp_transcoding.
  • A directory for storing media metadata, found at /var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support.

  1. To ensure consistent access to your Plex server, it’s advisable to use a static IP address. Retrieve your current IP address with the command:

  1. At the end of this file, add the following line, replacing YOUR IP with the IP address obtained earlier:
   ip=YOUR IP
  1. Save and exit the file by pressing CTRL + X, then Y, and finally Enter.

However, it’s important to note that the official mobile Plex apps require a purchase for full feature access, while most other apps, including the web app, are free with only a select few features needing a subscription.

To access Plex through a web browser, enter your Raspberry Pi’s IP address followed by the port 32400 and /web/. For example:

192.168.1.100:32400/web/

Upon accessing the URL, you’ll be prompted to log in. You can sign up for a new account or sign in to an existing one. You can bypass this step by re-entering the URL.

Setting Up Libraries in Plex

The process of setting up your music, movie, and TV show libraries in Plex is straightforward:

  1. Click on “Add Library” in the left-hand column.

Resolving File Permission Issues in Plex

A common issue with Plex on the Raspberry Pi is file access permission errors. This section will demonstrate how to modify permissions for an ext4 drive.

For NTFS or FAT formatted drives, you may need to remount the drive with adjusted mounting options, as these filesystems don’t support the Linux permission system.

  1. Determine the location of the drive or folder for which you want to adjust permissions. For example, an ext4 drive mounted at /mnt/pimounteddisk/.
  2. Switch to superuser mode with the command:
   sudo su

1. Firstly we need to update the Raspberry Pi’s firmware, and we can do this by running the following command, it can take some time. Make sure your Raspberry Pi doesn’t lose power during this.

sudo rpi-update

2. Once the firmware update has completed, turn off your Raspberry Pi and take out your SD Card.

Once you have removed your SD Card, insert the SD Card into a reader connected to a computer. The reason for this is that we need to modify the Raspberry Pi’s boot config file

The file we are after is located at /boot/config.txt on the SD Card, open it up with your favorite text editor. Add the following new line to this file.

audio_pwm_mode=2

Once you have edited this file, you can save it and place the SD Card back into your Raspberry Pi and power it back on.

3. With your Raspberry Pi powered back on, there are two more things we need to do before the improved analog audio driver works well with Shairport. The next step is to set it, so the analog jack is the main audio out and not the HDMI output.

We can utilize the following command in the Raspberry Pi’s terminal to do this.

amixer cset numid=3 1

4. Now there is one final thing we must do to finish improving our Raspberry Pi AirPlay device, and that is to modify the volume db Range that Shairport uses. We can modify the range by changing it in the configuration file.

Run the following command to begin editing the configuration file.

sudo nano /usr/local/etc/shairport-sync.conf

5. Within this file make the following changes.

Find

 volume_range_db = 60

Replace with

volume_range_db = 30

We can now save the file by pressing CTRL X then pressing Y and then ENTER.

6. Now to make sure all these changes are properly loaded in, we will restart the Raspberry Pi by running the following command.

sudo reboot

Even after following the steps above, you may still find the audio lacking.  Here are a few more tips to improve the audio output of your Raspberry Pi.

  1. Use an external USB sound card: Using a USB sound card can help improve the sound quality by leaving the D/A conversion to the interface. HiFiBerry and PecanPi HAT are some of the popular options available in the market.
  2. Use Pulseaudio: Pulseaudio is a package for the RPi that significantly increases the quality of the audio.

Method 1: Using Chromium Browser

  2. A Computer
    In this post, we’ll be using a Raspberry Pi with a micro SD card.

The first thing you need to convert an arcade cabinet to Raspberry Pi is a video converter board. This board will allow you to plug any computer with an HDMI port (such as the Raspberry Pi) into your cabinet’s monitor.

You’ll need this component because the monitor that comes with most Arcade1Up products doesn’t have standard computer display connections like VGA or HDMI. They’re simple LCD panels.

When shopping for a converter board, make sure to get one that has compatibility with your type of cabinet.

To install the converter board, follow these steps:

  • Gain access to your Arcade1Up’s monitor through the back panel. Here, you’ll find a box with a few screws in them. Remove them.
  • Then remove the box, power cords, connectors, and the ground wire.

Just remember that due to their slow processing speeds, most Pi devices won’t be able to run heavy 3D games. For those, you’ll need the processing speed of a PC. 

But if you’re planning on exclusively emulating 2D arcade games from the 90s then don’t worry. 

You won’t need much processing power to handle games from that era so don’t bother splurging on the newest Pi device. Remember, the best Raspberry Pi for Arcade 1Up mods is one that you have lying around.

But even if you choose to stick with them, you’ll still need to set up the USB encoder for your new Pi computer to process and register joystick movements and button presses.

You can find a variety of options online, such as custom kits from sites like Ultimarc.com, which come with everything you need for the conversion. Just make sure that the buttons you get are compatible with your computer and joystick type.

Installing them is as easy as connecting each button to its respective pin on the USB encoder board (this will be provided in the kit). Then plug the USB encoder board into your Pi’s USB port.

Step 2 – Gather Your Materials

Timber makes for a great material when building an arcade cabinet, as wood is easy to manipulate and cut into the required shapes and sizes, while still being incredibly durable. You may want to use some extra materials such as plastic or paper to add embellishments to the cabinet itself, but for the most part, plywood, MDF or other sheet material is all that you will need! 

Of course, you will also need other building materials, such as hinges, screws, L-brackets, nails, glue, and some paint to complete the look.

Step 3 – Start Building – Follow The Instructions!

Once you have got all of the right materials, and the perfect plans, simply follow the instructions stipulated on the plans. Be sure to follow them as closely as possible to get the perfect look, and to ensure that the arcade cabinet is able to withstand some heavy use. 

Step 4 – Get Decorating

At this point, you should have your cabinet fully built as per the plans you have chosen, so next comes the exciting part. At this point in the process, you should begin planning out the design you want to have on the side of your arcade cabinet.
